Embracing Progress: The Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act

Did you know that the beauty industry has been operating without comprehensive regulation in nearly 85 years? It's time for a change!

On April 27, 2022, I was standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial listening to a rabble-rousing speech from our Founder, Gregg Renfrew. It was our national lobbying day where I represented the State of Minnesota, and together with fellow brand advocates, we collectively held over 60 meetings with Congress and their staff. Our hearts were full of passion and our minds were overloaded with peer-reviewed research. We shared our stories and asked for legislative support.

What we didn't know one year ago was that we would be the women who helped pass the first federal cosmetic reform law since the FDR signed the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act on 25 June 1938. How incredible is that? I still get goosebumps just thinking about it.

What is MoCRA?

Simply put, the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act is a groundbreaking step towards a cleaner, safer beauty industry.

As a mother of two daughters and advocate for clean living, I am thrilled to see this long-overdue update and am deeply honored to have been part of its approval. This package aims to enhance the safety and transparency of cosmetics, ensuring that the products we use on our skin and bodies align with our health and ethical values.

With this legislation, we're paving the way for stricter ingredient regulations, rigorous testing protocols, and increased transparency in labeling. Buh-bye, harmful chemicals and vague marketing claims!

Through the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act, we're prioritizing our well-being and empowering consumers to make informed choices about the products they bring into their lives.

Join me in raising up beauty and celebrating this pivotal moment in the beauty industry's history. Together, we can create a future where clean beauty is the standard, not the exception.

How Beautycounter is raising up the standard of beauty.

One by one, we are leading a movement to a future where all beauty is clean, and all beauty is safe. As the pioneers of the clean beauty industry, (we actually coined the term in 2013), we were built upon 5 Unique Pillars:

Safety

We have a holistic, science-based approach to ingredient safety and evaluation. We screen, we test and we analyze. Obsessively. Click HERE to meet our Science Advisory Council

Responsible Sourcing

We tackle high risk materials to increase transparency and traceability in supply chain. Have you seen our Mica mining mini-documentary? We lift the veil on the shady underside of this sparkly and safe ingredient. Watch it HERE.

Efficacy

We are relentlessly innovating clean, high-performing products. From Allure, InStyle to Refinery29, we are always at the top of their lists, year after year. Check out a few of our best-selling, safer and award-winning products!

Sustainability

Our comprehensive focus on environmental impact from packaging to climate is second to none. By 2025, 100% of our packaging will be recycled, recyclable, refillable, reused, or compostable. Do you have pumps, caps and tubes that cannot be recycled? Leverage Beautycounter x PACT Collective’s Mail-Back Collection Program and download a shipping label!

Advocacy

We use the power of collective action to tirelessly advocate for more health protective laws. In 2022, Beautycounter helped pass the first federal law regulating the personal care products and cosmetics industry in the United States since 1938. And I was there!
